IDF: solar-powered CPUs

Among the many presentations and demonstrations that we saw during the first day of 2011 IDF, we point out an interesting project that will demonstrate how to reduce fuel consumption is the focal point around which all the research and development of IT in this case Intel.

During the first keynote of this IDF, held by CEO Paul Otellini, was shown a very special position, because the CPU, which has not been provided to the general good chance but with a low voltage Pentium or Atom (which was excluded has well it is a pre-production), was able to remain operational with only a small solar cell. Just to be more precise: all other components of the system were powered by a common power supply and only took the CPU power from the cell.

Despite this, the result is remarkable, because the operating system was fully functional and the solar cell very small, little more than a postage stamp. Difficult to estimate the consumption of the CPU, if not impossible, but it is certain that the energy produced by such a cell is very little.

Intel wanted to demonstrate how the work in Intel Labs is strongly focused on energy, enough to be cited in this IDF much more than performance, one true heart of the issues a few years ago. Not by chance the example has been done when the discourse has shifted to Has well, Sandy Bridge micro architecture of the post, which should ensure very low fuel consumption compared to current solutions.
