Distribution and installation
The first truly new in Mac OS X 10.7 is in the mode of distribution to the public: Lion is the first of the Apple operating system to be distributed in the form of digital downloads. The platform chosen by Apple is obviously distribution Mac App Store, launched last January. The decision to sell the house in Cupertino also an operating system through its virtual store, is to explain clearly what the future vision in the software distribution: ban the physical media and digital delivery to the open road, with the likely consequence of seeing any optical drive disappear from the systems (at least the consumer, we believe that the optical drive on the professional machines will stand for some time) that Apple will begin selling soon.
The package of Lion is quite large: it is a download size of approximately 3.70 GB, which may be intractable by those who do not have a broadband connection from adequate performance. Apple tries to cater to these users in two ways: one version of Lion commercialized on USB drive (though at a higher price, as we shall see in the conclusions), and a custom installation service to be carried out at an Apple Store in the area of.
Once finished downloading the package, the screen will automatically appear with which to start the installation of Lion. And 'advisable, before proceeding with the actual installation, make a backup of your system to prevent the accidental loss of important data and documents.
The installation procedure will create a hidden boot partition size of 650MB which will take place through the actual installation of the operating system after a short reboot the machine. The same partition is then used later by the means appropriate to the activities of system recovery or to reinstall your operating system. Booting the machine from this partition you will have the usual installer's operating system already used by Apple in previous versions of Mac OS X.
It 'important to note that at this stage of the update the user interaction is not required, if not for the hard drive selection and acceptance of license terms. Disappears so any opportunity to customize the installation (such as the choice not to install certain items, perhaps not necessary for our activities in order to save disk space), since everything is conducted in a completely automatic. Finally, note that for the installation of Lion must have the latest version of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
