Windows runtime library (Win RT) is the main set of APIs for application development in Windows 8 design Metro. Officially, at least as reported by Microsoft, this new set of elements is not going to replace anything in the end, however, the use of Win RT represents the future and many Web developers to abandon Silver light app in favor of the new set of APIs .
Silver light was, before yesterday, the latest platform for developing web applications: established as a subset. NET Framework, the platform has enabled the development of applications, from the Web, could have access to the system and use the rendering engine Internet Explorer. A web-based application built on Silver light, and can thus appear to be installed on the system and its work in a dedicated window, outside the browser.
Windows runtime library is a turning point for a rather important reason: it is not a subset. NET Frame work. The diagram of the new development platform is shown below:
Languages like HTML5/CSS/Javascript, along with those canons. NET (C, C + +, C # and VB) will be handled without problems by the new API package. At the moment there seems to be a direct link between, however, development platform and user interface: it is not clear why all the parties to submit applications using Win RT style "meters".
What is clear is that Microsoft identifies the slide, starting today, two kinds of applications. The first is the so-called "metro style": it is characterized by the new design and applications that can be developed with its own new API Win RT . From the usage point of view, Microsoft assures, will surely be more engaging.
The second class of applications that can be developed and run on Windows 8 is defined as "desktop applications". These applications are canonical, we are used to manage and use Windows today's scenario.
The strategy is therefore rather clear and obvious: Microsoft has introduced Windows 8 as an operating system without compromise. But there is, however, have to be an important transition, the new graphical interface, improved and simplified, it is likely to conflict directly with that which is the experience of use that Windows has provided to date. Win RT represents the set of tools that will be provided to developers to create applications optimized for the new interface, but it will still inhibited the ability to support traditional applications.
But the tip about the new Microsoft applications?
One answer comes indirectly by observing the sessions that the company devotes to developers these days: a large room for HTML5 and JavaScript to write applications more "interactive" and "metro style", but to little. Net, C # and Visual Basic. None for Silver light. And that says a lot.
