One of the most interesting demonstrations held during the Intel Developer Forum keynote of his 2011 is based on self refresh technology, which will be adopted in future LCD panel developed by LG based Shuriken and perspective from other companies.
The purpose of this technology is to contain the overall consumption through more efficient management of the connection between PC, GPU and display the same depending on the type of images that are displayed by the latter. If the play is in motion must be constantly updating the screen, such as when playing a video stream, but if you see something static, like a gallery of images, the screen will continue to play the same image for a long time.
Self Refresh technology operates in a very simple way: when the screen should display a static image is interrupted direct connection between the display and GPU, allowing the GPU and CPU to enter sleep mode. The static image is loaded directly from local memory integrated into the display, conveniently placed for this purpose.
The result, according to advance during the keynote from Intel, is a reduction in consumption of up to 500mW , which amount may seem small but that according to the pattern of use of the system can lead to an increase in battery life between 45 and 60 minutes .
