TSMC will ensure the production of Apple A6 and A7

The Taiwanese newspaper Digi Times reports rumors according to which Apple and TSMC have reached an agreement for the production of next-generation processors for mobile devices to Apple.

According to the newspaper, will use the TSMC process technologies in 28 and 20-nanometer chips that are likely to take the name of the A6 and A7. These two processors have not been officially announced by Apple, since they are currently still in deep development. According to sources close to the processor component suppliers should equip A6 models of iPhone and Apple iPad will be announced by next year.

According to information available, the agreement between the two companies seems to be quite beneficial to TSMC, which should see no particular impact on its gross margins came in the second quarter to 46%.

During the month of July, TSMC has given way to a stage production of A6 evaluation to allow Apple to check whether the foundry had acceptable rates of return. In the first quarter of 2012 will focus on production design of the chip, which will be publicly disclosed no earlier than the second quarter of next year.

TSMC, however, would not Apple and incorporated into all the back-end production, such as packaging and testing of chips. In fact, sources indicate that Apple intends to commission this work to another company specialized, since the foundry does not have sufficient capacity for this type of service.
