According to market analyst firm NPD Group , sales of the period known as "back-to-school" are describing the situation better than what was found during the first half of 2011, when retail sales of notebook solutions in the United States been decreasing over 12% over the previous year. During the months of July and August, sales of Windows notebooks have seen a decline of 4% from a year ago, but the only sales in August showed a slight increase of 4%.
"The results recorded on a sequential basis by NPD show that after a small decline at the beginning of the year, mostly due to concerns that followed the release of Windows 7, Windows notebook systems market remains solid. The last two weeks of August are the most important period for back-to-school purchases and these weeks have seen an increase of more than 8% compared to retail sales last year, "said Stephen Baker, vice president of Industry Analysis for NPD.
A first factor to the increase in sales volumes was the decline in average selling prices of systems (ASP - Average selling price). During July and August 2011, the ASP for Windows notebooks has settled on the figure of $ 477, which represents a decrease of 7% over the same period last year. The decline in ASP has meant that 65% of all sales of notebook computers have been in the products sold under $ 500. In this segment, sales rose 12% over the previous year, while sales for the Windows notebook systems above $ 500 have fallen by 23%.
"The triggering of a number of promotions has brought consumers into stores for the last half of the season back-to-school. The positive response of consumers to a policy of aggressive pricing for notebook PCs, despite the persistent demand for tablet systems, indicates that the upcoming holiday season will probably be characterized by a number of promotional initiatives, "said Baker.
